INDIA HAS MAXIMUM COPYRIGHT NOTICES FOR INFRINGEMENT
The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across India have got more than 15,000 notices by the Business Software Alliance (BSA)
for activities of infringement. It is stated by the BSA’s Vice-President and Regional Director (Asia) that India is the country with the fastest increase in copyright infringement as compared to any other country in Asia. He also said that people
should not take infringement lightly and understand that whatever they do on net can be and will be traced and India
has also attributed to lack of awareness and total disregard of the copyright laws. There are 62 countries that have ratified
with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) but India is not a part of WIPO.
WIPO APPOINTED INDIAN PATENT OFFICE AS ISA & IPEA
Indian Patent Office was granted the prestigious status of International Searching Authority(ISA) and as International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), bringing the total number of such Authorities to 15. These Authorities, in particular, prepare international search reports and opinions on patent applications submitted under
the PCT.
PFIZER PATENTED FIRST HIV DRUG PATENT IN INDIA
Indian Patent office (Mumbai) has granted first patent to a known global drug major Pfizer’s new HIV/AIDS drug Celzentry (generic name: Maraviroc). Maraviroc is the first HIV/AIDS
treatment drug and the first oral HIV medicine developed in
ten years to get patent in India, in a significant development
against the backdrop of the patent battle between multinational
drug companies and patients groups in India. Maraviroc
is a drug, which would work by blocking the entry of the virus
into human cells, has received approval from the US Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2007 and after one month
the European Commission approved it. Patent to Maraviroc is
still pending under the European Patent Office (EPO).
TATA MOTOR’s MOVE FOR GLOBAL DESIGN PATENT
The Tata Motors seeking to protect their new concept and
ideas that they have used to develop the much-awaited Rs.
1 lac. car have filed for a global patent for the design and
technology involved. The move for a global patent is to protect
their ideas from getting imitated in the auto industry but the
aspect of technology that Tata motors want to get it patent
is not clear yet. A source from the Tata motors said that the car
will have a rear engine and boot space in front and would be
launched by middle of next year. This move is also for launching
the car outside India, like Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America
and Eastern Europe.
